Since the 19th century, more than 100 weeping willows have lined the northern end of Seneca Lake, naturally screening passersby and those pausing to sit beneath their branches.
Inspired by the trees’ graceful form, this installation was designed to bring their natural shade, movement, and beauty closer to Geneva’s downtown lakefront. Multiple layers and lengths of fabric hang from a trunk-like metal base and sway in response to the wind, embodying the trees’ leaved branches; the cluster of structures is connected to others, recalling the relationship of trees within a forest.
The result is a design that honors the trees’ inherent symbolism yet reinterprets them for future enjoyment.
